Words of Wisdom
What I wish I would have known….
My two years at Fuqua are almost over, and I can’t believe it! I wish I would have known how fast business school would fly by and had I believed those who told me so, I probably would have been less focused on the endless ‘to do list’ and I would have made more time to have fun. Honestly, as a student, you get really busy and the ‘to do list’ never ends, no matter how much you try. Also, I wish I would have known how early in the first year you have to apply to participate in the Global Consulting Practicum (GCP) and Global Academic Travel Experience (GATE). I participated in the GATE to the Middle East during spring break but had I planned better, I would have probably participated in GCP as well. I think you should have an idea of which program you would like to participate in, if not both, before you come. Also, I wish I would have known how much professors enjoy meeting students and helping us understand the material. During the first term, I didn’t take advantage of stopping by my professors’ offices to ask questions because I felt they were too busy. However, I soon realized that they really appreciate it when you stop by to ask questions because they like to share their knowledge and be helpful. Fuqua has amazing professors but it is really up to you as a student to seek their help and advice. Outside of Duke, I wish I would have known how much Durham has to offer. I spent my first term in two locations: Fuqua and my apartment. It was not until the fall break that I began to explore Durham and began to appreciate everything it has to offer. One of my favorite places is the American Tobacco District and all the Mexican restaurants and bakeries. On a lighter note, I wish I would have known how addictive Bojangle’s biscuits are because I can’t stop going there though I have tried many times. Though I wish I would have known many things during the earlier part of my first year, I have enjoyed my journey and look forward to sharing it with you in the fall!
