Life As a Diverse Student
An important part of selecting the right MBA program for me, was determining what my experience would be as an underrepresented minority. As someone who attended Duke University for an undergraduate degree, I was familiar with being surrounded by a diverse group of students. However this did not necessarily follow as I entered corporate America; it was something I had taken for granted as an undergrad, and thus something that I desperately sought in the MBA program I would enroll in.
When I first visited Fuqua, during the Duke MBA Workshop for Minority Candidates, I was thrilled to be surrounded by a group of talented minority students, but I couldn’t help but wonder if my experience that weekend was truly indicative of what I would experience if I enrolled. Several months later, when I finally enrolled in Duke’s Fuqua School of Business I was not disappointed.
My experience at Fuqua thus far has been fantastic! Fuqua’s commitment to diversity manifests itself in various ways. For instance, prior to the Affinity conferences (National Black MBA Conference, NSHMBA, National Association of Women MBA’s Conference etc.) the Career Management Center held sessions dedicated solely to preparing those of us that would be attending. Similarly the Black and Latino MBA Organization (BLMBAO), has hosted a number of dinners and recruiting receptions with many of the top employers that we are all seeking employment with. These sessions have been instrumental in providing an atmosphere to network with recruiters in a more intimate setting.
Beyond the commitment of the administration and student clubs like BLMBAO, the general student body is the best example of how diversity features here at Fuqua. A simple glance into any first year classroom will show a collection of students from all over the globe. The diversity of, both our core classes and 6 person first year teams, has proven to be the most rewarding part of my experience at Fuqua, to date. The opportunity to learn from such a diverse array of perspectives is truly a privilege that Fuqua affords all of its students, and it is why it is such a pleasure to be a part of this community.
